By Roger Hughes

Viewing animals from afar can be exciting when part of a safari. Whereas, there are other times when individuals prefer a close up view. In the case of Alaska brown bear viewing, individuals can have it both ways. For, some of the most beautiful spots for viewing black, brown and grizzly bears are located in the state.

Some of the best places to view these and other bears in the wild include, Brook Falls, the McNeil River, Lake Clark National Park and Redoubt Bay. For, a number of different species of bears can be seen in these areas, including brown bears. While this is the case, there are different times of the year when viewing is better than at other times.

In the Summer, Chinitna Bay is also an excellent spot for bear watching. For, the bears are often moving between locations in search of food. In addition, as bears are attracted to beach grasses, shellfish and salmon, the bay is often a popular location to see bears feeding in shallow waters. If desiring to travel between different viewing areas, there are ATV, towed trailers and personal guides which can help make doing so easy.

When it comes to Redoubt Bay, the best viewing often occurs from June through August from a covered boat with an expert guide. Whereas, Katmai and Brook Falls is best in mid-Summer. During this time, Brook Falls plays host to fisher bears whom love to snap fish atop running waterfalls. Whereas, Lake National Park is often better for viewing during late Summer months.

While it can often be hard to win a spot in the lottery, McNeil River State Game Sanctuary is an extremely popular place to view bears. In fact, it is so popular that the area is heavily controlled, with visitors selected by a lottery in order to protect the area. As such, individuals and families interested in visiting the area need to contact the location for more information.

If still having questions related to watching brown bears or where to stay, there are a number of professional tour guides and travel agencies which can help. In addition, as bear populations are scattered throughout the state, there's always a chance to spot a bear on different types of trips. Some of these include, flightseeing tours, day cruises and ATV tours along beaches and more rural areas.

While seeing wildlife can never really be guaranteed, there are some places in which bears can always be viewed. These include the Alaska Zoo and the Alaska Conservation Center.
