Guide For Grand Turk Cruise Center In Turks And Caicos

By Andrea Davidson

Grand Turk Cruise Center (GTCC) is the berthing terminal for cruise liners stopping by for a visit to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Grand Turk is the official capital of the archipelago, located 30 miles from the Bahamas and 575 miles from Florida's shores. Most of the ships that dock at this terminal are on Caribbean cruises after picking up passengers from Miami and other seaports on the U. S. East coast.

The pier that stretches 3,000 feet from the shore is the first thing that visitors getting off ships get to see, followed by the welcome center and other recreational facilities. The ship covers most of it, so passengers only have to walk over about 400 feet to get to the center. The weather is always bright and sunny throughout the year, and sets the mood for a fun-filled holiday.

At most other ports of call in the Caribbean or elsewhere, visitors have to leave the port and go looking for shops, restaurants, bars, beaches, entertainment and all the usual tourist attractions. Going from one place to another takes up a lot of the short time available before the ship moves on to the next destination. GTCC, on the other hand, is a berthing terminal and resort-style complex all rolled into one.

GTCC offers everything tourists need, including a beach, swimming pool with air-conditioned cabanas, a shopping complex with duty-free goods, huge restaurants and more. They even have the FlowRider, a water park with artificial waves that surfers can ride. The kicker is that access to most facilities is free for visitors since it is part of the shore excursion organized by the cruise company.

The best place for food and drinks is the world's largest Margaritaville, also located within GTCC. It has a restaurant and bar that fills people with an infectious holiday atmosphere. There's also a retail store that sells all kinds of Jimmy Buffett merchandise.

The best place on the island for maxing out credit cards is the GTCC shopping complex. It has 10,000 square feet of retail space set aside just for duty-free goods. There are many other shops for apparel, jewelry and other high-end designer branded items. It also has restaurants, along with gift and souvenir shops peddling local trinkets, handicrafts and art works.

Apart from FlowRider and the duty-free shops, the most popular attraction for visitors is Governor's Beach with its sugar white sand. Air-conditioned shuttles take people from GTCC to the beach and back. A lot of people simply snooze on a free beach chair and soak in the sun. Some may find it exhilarating to rent snorkeling gear and explore the magical world and coral reefs beneath the turquoise water's sparkling surface.

GTCC has its own beach in the form of South Beach, a nice and quiet place between the pier and welcome center. Passengers willing to tear themselves away from the Grand Turk Cruise Center can explore other parts of the island. Gibb's Cay is a major tourist attraction with its gentle stingrays and soft white sand. The historic colonial architecture in Cockburn Town is also worth a visit.
