Watch Hill Beach RI is a wonderful summer destination for swimming, sailing, fishing, hiking, surfing, and birdwatching. There's also local shopping and fine restaurants in this small town where everything is in walking distance. The town attracts tourists to it's scenic, idyllic coastline with a variety of seaside areas open to the public.
While most homes are summer mansions, Watch Hill Beach RI is also an affordable summer tourist destination. Located between New York City and Boston, it's an ideal spot for a day trip. There are Inns, hotels, vacation cottages and condos to rent for longer stays. This enchanting resort community is also a popular boating destination with ample anchorage for yachts.
The sand spit peninsula where Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean meet, is a protected conservation area. It's on a major bird migratory route, and provides forage for other wildlife year round. It's a great area for birdwatching. Springtime, a portion of the shoreline is closed while Piping Plover birds build their nests and raise their young. In the summer this coastal peninsula attracts tourists interested in fishing, boating, swimming, skiing, and surfing. Meander among the dunes on sandy footpaths for views of the ocean, mansions, the village, and Fishers Island, New York.
East Beach is a popular recreation area on the Atlantic Ocean. Take the right of way leading from Bluff Road to the coast, then follow the shore from the old lighthouse past the renovated Ocean House Hotel. Some of the coastline on either side is private. There's plenty of public access as well, but no amenities or lifeguards. Enjoy fishing, hiking, swimming, sunbathing, and surfing.
On the way to Carousel Beach, the kids will love a ride on the antique Flying Horse Carousel. The horses are suspended on chains from a center frame so they seem to "fly" as the ride turns. Then make a left on Bay Street and climb the hill to the shore. There's a family friendly swim area with lockers, showers, and a lifeguard.
The 7 miles of coastline between Watch Hill and Westerly is the Misquamicut shoreline. Visitors will find plenty of seaside open to fishing, swimming, surfing and boating. Many shops along the route offer jet ski, kayak, and paddle board rentals. There's also surfing gear for sale and opportunities to learn surfing skills. About half way there, stop and enjoy the state run swimming area with its picnic areas, separate swimming and surfing areas, concession stands, lifeguards, plenty of shade, and plenty of parking.
A few miles from Watch Hill, on the way to Westerly is the Atlantic Beach Park, a favorite with families. The park has a ferris wheel, antique carousel, kiddie amusement park, and gift shops. Next door is the Bayview Fun Park with go-karts, mini-golf, batting cages, and water slides. The public shoreline has a concession stand including a gift shop. Rent jet skis, paddle boards, or kayaks, or sign up for surfing lessons.
The shoreline is a fisherman's delight with surf fishing available on East Beach and the Napatree peninsula. This is a yachting community with fishing boats, charters, moorings, and dock facilities available during the busy season, Memorial Day through Labor Day. There are hotels, cottages, and condos to rent for extended stays. Once there, everything is in walking distance.
