General Information On A 72 Hour Emergency Kit

By Kelly Wood

The purpose of the 72 hour emergency kit is to keep individuals safe, particularly when they find themselves in disastrous and dangerous situations. It is highly recommended that all individuals and families can access to such packs in case of emergencies. You can never predict what will happen. With little notice you may be forced to leave your property and only able to grab your essentials. You might not have the luxury of shopping or searching for the needed supplies. These kits should include the basic things from the household that may be needed in an emergency.

After a major emergency, you may have to survive on your own for a few days. This means that you will need a supply of water, food and other goods in order to last for at least 72 hours. Local relief workers and officials may be on scene following a disaster trying to help everyone. Still, it could take many hours or days before you are brought back into safety.

Likewise, when these emergencies occur, services that we are used to have are usually shutdown. There might be no sewage treatment, electricity, telephone or gas. In fact, most of these things may be unavailable for an extended period of time, depending on the case at hand. Your kit of supplies should feature goods that help you operate during these outages.

The items that are included in these are relative to the people who are making the kits. Every person will need something different. Still, there are many things that should go in all such packs. Food and water, personal supplies and medication, light and fuel, equipment, bedding and clothing, and money and personal documents are examples of the categories of goods placed in these kits.

It is recommended that these emergency kits be updated at least every six months. Make a note of it on your calendar so you do not forget. All food, medication and water should be fresh and not expired. The clothes should fit and the personal documents should be up to date. If there are batteries included, they should be fully charged. Some items included may break open, leak or melt. Divide these things up in separate bags to prevent any problems. Most older kids are able to pack their own items and families with small children may benefit from including small games or toys to keep kids entertained and feeling comfortable at such a stressful time.

Families should have a game plan for these situations. Every member should know where and what the kit is. They should also know what actions to take, especially when there are many people in the household. Emergencies are usually unexpected so it is good to be prepared for these cases as best as possible.

There is not one kit that is best for all. Consider the needs of your family and you. Make sure the kit is customized to you and includes all that you believe is essential for survival. As the packs are meant to sustain life for up to three days, make sure to ration if you expect to be in the situation longer than that. Be smart with your decisions.

Individuals and families should consider making a 72 hour emergency kit. These should have the basic necessities for survival. Update them every six months so contents remain up to date.
