If you want a true Los Angeles experience, but only have one day to spend in this bustling metropolis, it can be tough to pick out just a few of the many attractions. There are literally hundreds of great things to see and do. If you are truly pressed for time, however, here's a one-day itinerary that can give you just a taste of Los Angeles.
Not only is Los Angeles the second most populous city in the country, Los Angeles County is the most populous county in the country and the whole of it encompasses more than 4,000 acres. So while one day will really only give you a glimpse of this city and its surrounding area, you can certainly plan a great that will allow you to taste a little bit of what the area has to offer. Of course, no trip to the Los Angeles area would be complete without a visit to the seashore.
Santa Monica, with its famous pier and boardwalk, is an excellent choice. Not only can you play in the surf and on the beach, there is a roller coaster, historic carousel and Ferris wheel powered by solar energy. There are carnival games, an arcade and plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants. Start off with a quick breakfast at a local bistro and then head to the pier or the beach for a few hours of fun.
If you think that everything in Los Angeles is new, you are quite mistaken. In the latter part of the 18th century, Spain established missions throughout California and Mexico and Los Angeles County contains two of the missions, both of which can be visited. Mission San Fernando Rey, which dates back to 1797, is located in the aptly named district of Mission Hills. The Mission San Gabriel Arcangel is another option, located in the city of San Gabriel, and this mission was completed in 1771, so it's actually older than the United States.
Griffith Park is another great spot for visitors to Los Angeles and is certainly akin to other famous city parks such as Central Park in New York City and London's Hyde Park. This 4,300-acre park includes the Griffith Observatory and Planetarium, the Los Angeles Zoo and the Travel Town Museum, which includes historic locomotives, trolley cars, passenger cars and other train-related displays. In addition, there are miles of hiking trails, playgrounds and an abundance of great scenery.
After your walk in the park, a quick drive will take you to Culver City and the wondrous world of YoKuMon. This shop is a great place for an afternoon treat. YoKuMon offers a variety of treats, from a dozen varieties of ice cream to shaved ice, but the signature treat is the $2 ice cream sandwich which is created by pressing a huge scoop of the shop's gourmet ice cream between two freshly baked cookies.
After this, the best way to cap off your evening is to spend it at the Hollywood Bowl. This outdoor theater, home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is not only an amazing bit of L.A. architecture, the view of the Hollywood Sign and Hollywood Hills make it a perfect L.A. venue. Artists vary from classical to jazz to even modern stars such as Pearl Jam. There are dozens of events to consider, so before you arrive in town, see if you can score tickets to something special on your one day in L.A.
