A Variety Of Fun Tours In NYC

By Rose Gill

Visiting the Big Apple is on many a bucket list. Of course if you do go to New York, you'll find that at all those places you've always wanted to see, like the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building, there are hordes of others with the same idea. This can mean standing in line for hours and never really having the time to fully explore the city. An organized tour can save you many headaches but can also be extremely dreary. However, there are several fun tours in NYC that will help you see this fabulous city in a new light.

As the world's most filmed city, NYC has some great television and movie tours. Some take you to sites featured in a variety of shows and films, from 'Glee', 'Friends' and 'How I Met Your Mother' to 'The Devil Wears Prada' and 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. Others are tailor-made for fans of a particular show, like 'Sex and the City'. A particularly entertaining tour is the 'Seinfeld' tour hosted by Harry Kramer, who inspired the character of Cosmo Kramer in the hit 'show about nothing'.

New York, New York has attracted many musicians through the years and a music-themed tour is just the way to explore this side of the city. You may choose to focus on a particular genre like the gospel from Harlem or punk rock from The Bowery. Another option is to choose only one artist, for instance Bob Dylan, to be the theme of your tour.

Many writers used to call the city home or visited for an extended period. If you're interested in literary history, you'll love a literary tour of the places where these writers lived, worked and found inspiration. Some found inspiration in the bottle and a very popular package is a pub crawl of Greenwich Village, starting at the White Horse Tavern, the haunt of literary bad boys Dylan Thomas, Hunter S. Thompson and Jack Kerouac.

During the Prohibition era, literary bad boys with a love of the bottle may have had to spend their nights in Hell's Kitchen instead. This was a neighborhood of bootleggers and gangsters. Later it became a favorite neighborhood for actors and artists too and a knowledgeable guide can tell you a lot about the area's colorful past. Another neighborhood tour that you may enjoy is one of the Upper East Side, especially Millionaires' Mile where the rich and famous have homes.

Its often violent past means that many people died rather unexpectedly in NYC. Some still haunt the streets and the high-rise or brownstone buildings. For a hair-raising experience, go on a guided tour of the city's haunted sites.

A ghost tour is best done on an empty stomach. Similarly, you shouldn't eat before undertaking a food tour. Whether it's in Chinatown, the East Village, Harlem, Brooklyn or simply on the sidewalks, you're bound to find a tour that you can sink your teeth into. Forget pub crawls: There are even cupcake crawls of NYC.

A tour with a difference is a great way to create unique travel memories. However, it's not just for out-of-towners. Even residents love going on fun tours in NYC to rediscover their city.
