Tanzania is definitely a top wildlife destination. Most Tanzania safari packages include at least one of their three safari circuits. Northern circuit includes the Serengeti National park and Ngorongoro crater. This circuit offers one of the best classical safaris in Africa, especially if it is timed with the annual migration of wild animals.
Serengeti National park is simply amazing place, declared as the essential part of the world heritage, and under direct protection of Unesco. You can visit this great place in any time of the year, but if you want to see one spectacular wildebeest migration, you should come between late January and August.
Ngorongoro crater is actually former volcano, usually teeming with wildlife. Except for giraffes, that can usually be seen in the conservation area, most animals may be seen here. The most common ones are elephants, hypos, zebras, wildebeests, lions, cheetah and others. You may also see the black rhino here.
Lake Manyara National park is especially popular for its tree-climbing lions. Grassy plains are home for variety of animals, including numerous buffalo, zebras and wildebeests. Hypo pool is one of those places where you can see large hypos up close. The lake is seasonally crowded by different water birds, including flamingos.
Tarangire National p.is crowded with all kinds of animals. This includes elephants, lions, gazelles and zebra. If you are lucky enough, you can even spot the rare fringe-eared Oryx, or large pythons resting on the trees. The best time to visit this place is during dry season, from June to October.
Selous Game Reserve is a great place to see large groups of giraffes, alongside impalas and zebras. These waterholes attract all kinds of wild animals, and lions see this as a great opportunity for catching something for their lunch. Dry season is the best time to come here, especially if you are interested for game viewing, although all other periods of year could be equally interesting.
Ruaha National Reserve is a home for most safari animals, except for rhinos. You can see exceptionally large lion prides here, as well as their famous wild dog packs. If these wild dogs are your primary interest, you should come here during their mating season, from June to August. Rainy periods should be avoided, for obvious reasons.
Chimps are the most popular residents of Gombe National Reserve. You'll find other primates here as well, including baboons. This small park is simply great for taking a long walk accompanied with expert guide. This place remains open in all seasons, but coming here during dry period of the year is always the best option.
Katavi National park offers a great tour around Katavi and Chada lakes, as well as the tour by the Katuma River, packed with crocodiles. You will find numerous elephants, zebras, buffalo and lions here as well, and sometimes even beautiful sable antelopes. You can choose short, four day tours, or longer ones. In any case, if you want to treat yourself with something really extraordinary, visit Tanzania.
