Travelling Soon? Take These Great Tips With You!

By Reyes Nordick

Travel is one of those things that everyone can get into, but in which not everyone really excels. Making travel arrangements can be a fast, painless thought-free process. However, getting the best deals and making the best plans, takes a little more effort. Here are a few tips for maximizing the benefits that good travel planning can bring.

Do your research before you book. Look for websites that have user reviews of the places you are interested in visiting. Ask people you know who have been there before. Doing the research yourself will help you know what to expect, as well as help you choose what you really want to do when you get to your destination.

If you're going to be going on a road trip, bring a power inverter with you. A power inverter is a handy device that you plug into your car's cigarette lighter and then lets you plug anything into it. It's great if you're traveling with kids since you can plug video games or a laptop in. When traveling by air, there is no longer any reason to carry a separate toiletries bag. All of your liquids and gels will need to fit into a Ziplock bag regardless. That bag will already be sealed, and will be smaller and lighter than any bag designated for the task.

When traveling with older children, get separate rooms. It is well worth the extra expense to get adjoining rooms when you are traveling with children. Kids love to have fun, and the excitement of a vacation can have them bouncing off the walls. Few parents can compete with the energy levels of a child. Even a simple partition can make the difference between a well-rested parent and a bleary-eyed adult who can barely function from lack of sleep.

Instead of going someplace far away, look for local attractions that you can travel to. Not only will you save time and money, but you will also be supporting local businesses and your local economy. If you need suggestions, call your local visitors bureau for suggestions on nearby activities for you and your family.

If you are traveling to an area where the tap water tastes strange to you, try using the hotel ice machines to get your water. The ice machines make use of water filters, so the quality is better but you don't have to cover the expense of bottled water. This can be used for your coffee maker in the room as well as other drinks.

Find out which vaccinations are needed in order to go to the country in which you are traveling to. Without these vaccinations, you may not be allowed to enter. Also, try to get these vaccinations far in advance of your trip, just in case you happen to have a reaction to it.

Never be satisfied with the rate you are given when making reservations at hotels or rental vehicles. Many times there are discounts that you may not have thought of and it is not the responsibility of the service provider to list those for every transaction. By asking you can prompt them to check, which they should be happy to do.

To make sure you have room for souvenirs you purchase on a trip, pack an empty duffle bag. The duffle bag can be folded up and stored with the rest of your items. When you're ready to leave, open up the duffle bag and use it to carry home everything you bought on your trip.

Driving far in a car means consistently changing radio stations for ones that a clear. To solve this, make CDs or tapes with all of the group's favorite songs so you can jam happily without distracting yourself by trying to find a clear station while driving. This also allows for you guys to listen to music non-stop rather then sit and wait for commercials to end.

Don't judge a hotel by its name alone. Look for the year it was built or last renovated, which can be very telling. Hotels can take a beating and a newly built budget hotel, may be much nicer than a luxury brand that is showing a lot of wear and tear from not being renovated in years. When traveling by car in the winter it is important to make frequent rest stops. Driving in the winter is more tiring than driving in the summer. You will want to make time to stop to stretch your legs. Taking a few minutes from driving will make a great amount of difference in improving your alertness behind the wheel.

If you are traveling by air, it is vital that you remember to drink enough water. Travel is stressful, and the running around can deplete your body of water. The recirculated air on airplanes and in most airports will further dehydrate you. Buy a refillable water bottle after you go through security to help with hydration.

When you are traveling, you can do a few things to save money at home. First of all, turn the air conditioner off or just down. Next, turn off the sprinklers. It will also help to put your lights on timers. And last, but not least, unplug your major appliances.

When traveling, make sure to have your affairs in order at home. Consider updating your will, have insurance documents in order, and leave power of attorney with a trusted friend or family member. If you have children, you may want to arrange a guardian for them in case something happens to you.

Pack a multi-tool knife in your luggage. The scissors can cut through zip ties, and the corkscrew is perfect for impromptu wine tastings. When you reach your destination and unpack, make sure this multi-purpose tool goes with you wherever you go. Don't put it in your carry-on though, as the airline won't allow it on your person in flight.

Check the State Department's travel alerts when you are planning a foreign trip. They provide up to date information related to your destination so you will know in advance if there is a medical or political emergency in the region. Make sure you have all the shots recommended by the department to avoid lengthy and possibly life threatening illnesses.

Everyone on board a plane, train or ship, has something in common, they have all paid for the privilege of being there. Some passengers seem happier than others, though. These are the wise travelers, who have made an effort to arrange their travel plans for maximum convenience and economy. A little education can help you to join their ranks and travel with a smile.
