From Disneyland to Dracula: Spooky Destinations for Halloween

By Emily Collins

The Bram Stoker Festival in Dublin marks 100 years since the horror novelist's death and is the perfect time to visit the Irish capital. Many weird and wonderful events have been planned to mark the occasion which incidentally runs alongside the much-loved holiday of Halloween.

You'll definitely find something to satisfy your first for blood here, whether it's enjoying a historical walk through the city or Clontarf Castle, watching one of the many literary or film events, or browsing the collectables at an antiques fair. The walking dead can even join the World Championship 5K Vampire Cloak Race, an annual event which takes runners into the heart of 'Stoker'land along the Clontarf seafront promenade and giving them the chance to win their own medal.

For a more family-friendly option, Disneyland Paris has extended opening during the Halloween season where holidaymakers can discover the charms of this family theme park. The 1am closing time means that you can enjoy all your favourite attractions by moonlight. What's more all your favourite characters will be decked out in seasonal costumes and performing in spooky shows from 1st October to 4th November.

If this is a little too theatrical for you, why not head to the land of the burrito for a more traditional Halloween-inspired adventure. Okay, it's not technically Halloween but Mexico's Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is in some ways even better. The festival which is held throughout Mexico on November 2nd celebrates the memory of deceased loved ones.

The day is an excuse to remember and honour loved ones. Common traditions as a result including creating an altar and placing personal mementoes, candles and flowers, that the travelling spirit may need on to it. A traditional recipe that you might see shops selling during this time are sugar skulls, which can be decorated and enjoyed as a sweet treat - there are even chocolate varieties available.
