I usually hate travel lists and particularly repetitive "top 6 things to do etc." but everyone else writes about it so here's my bit... As a random wanderer you simply have to love and embrace sunsets. That defining moment that ends your natural daylight part on any given day. As the sun disappears, you can take with it memories on how gracefully this hot sphere left your world. Where were you and what were you doing for sunset? These are 6 random sunsets - not necessarily the best just a list of unusual ones I came up with from my travels. Check it out:
1. Sunset at Casapueblo, URUGUAY:
The wonder of Casapueblo will never leave me. This is simply a breathtaking place to watch the sun go down at night. With sunset experiences, it cannot JUST be about the sun dropping from the sky, it has to be about where you are, who you're with and what you're doing. Casapueblo is wonderful and I highly recommend it - howeverit is not that easy to find. Stay in nearby Punta del Este and catch a bus out to it. The bus will actually be heading for Montevideo or Maldonado and you need to ask the driver to let you out at a village called Punta Ballena. This is basically a beach resort with a famous artistic seafront building known as Casapueblo. A 2 kilometre walk will take you from where the bus leaves you, all the way down to the entrance for Casapueblo. You have to pay into Casapueblo but believe me it's worth it! Once inside enjoy the mini museum and then head to the balcony just before sunset to get a good seat. Beer and food is served to your table.
2. Sunset at Bruny Island, Tasmania, AUSTRALIA:
Bruny Island my not bethe most southern island in Australia, but it has to be one of them. It's a tranquil and inspiring little remote island, you will arrive (most likely) by ferry from the town of Kettering in mainland Tasmania. Just before sunset head to "the neck" in the centre of Bruny to view both ways as the sun sets. Climb up the steps to the top and sit down and relax. It really is quiet here. And the sun fading as it shines on the calm water is an image and memory you won't forget.
3. Sunset at Boscombe in Bournemouth, ENGLAND:
I often neglect the beauty of actual places I live in, this post will include two of them to actually make up for that. Bournemouth is an English coastal seaside party town. It's famous for beaches and parties. From the end of Bournemouth Pier on summer nights you can watch the sun fade far to the east. I worked by the beach for four summers so the "view from my office window" helped me add Bournemouth in Dorset to this list. There's a host of bars along the seafront to watch the sun set over a cocktail...
4. Sunset from The Fortress, Danxiashan, Guangdong, CHINA:
China has far too much for any traveller to ever see all of it. That's the beauty of places like Danxiashan - it is relatively unknown yet this place is just amazing. It's well off the beaten track. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty and has some incredible hikes, mountains and rock formations. You will walk past a rock like is shaped like a penis willy or todger on your way up to a fortress. From this fortress you can get an away view of the sunset - far into the distance over Guangdong Province in China. Worth seeing!
5. Sunset on Kenting Beach in TAIWAN:
Taiwan has enough magic to keep you entertained for a lifetime. Our trip to Kenting on the south coast was amazing. Late afternoon myself and my travel buddy cracked open a tin of beer, went for a splash in the waves and watched the sun sink away beyond us from a quiet beach. Total heaven.
6. Sunset at Lam Tin in HONG KONG:
Another entry for Asia and an unusual one, but from the east side of Kowloon at Hong Kong you can see a magnificent sunset view of the skyscrapers of Hong Kong island. There is a non deliberate viewing platform within a 10 minute walk of Lam Tin MTR station. Head there before the hot ball fades and you'll catch an immense view of this beautiful city skyline against a changing sky!
So there you go - 6 random unusual places to watch the sun go down. I can't wait for my next sunset viewing. An incredible thing to see while travelling around.
