Imagine yourself exploring this great, never ending Amazon rainforest. You really want to see wildlife. But most wildlife moves about through the canopy of the trees. From where you are on the ground, your vision is limited, because the undergrowth and the leaves are in your way. From the relative darkness where you are on the ground, you get blinded when you look up towards the tree crowns. The leaves almost look black. That makes it difficult to distinguish the any characteristics of birds and mammals.
Only from the water one can see the birds, flowers and mammals as they perch or move about in the shrubs and lower trees along the waterside. But this only is the case along narrow rivers and creeks. Along the wider rivers, it is generally difficult to observe wildlife along the river. Often, the rivers are so wide that they appear almost seas. On the narrow rivers on the other hand, one feels in the middle of the forest while the river still opens up the sky enough to see the lower trees and shrubs along the river and there is enough light to observe birds, flowers and mammals in the branches.
As creeks and are most abundant among the headwaters, the narrow creeks are mostly found in the Andes foothills. But given the hilly terrain, few Amazon headwaters are navigable and only one networks of interconnected lakes is known anywhere in the Andes countries. Cuyabeno Fauna Reserve however, has a bowl-shaped plain with a shallow outlet, so that water accumulates, thus creating quite a number of beautiful interconnected lakes. It is one of the reserves extending on both sides of the equator, which makes it one of the richest areas in the world for differnt species of mammals and birds.
No other Amazon reserve in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru or Bolivia is so conveniently accessible as Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve and worldwide, no other Amazon park can be reached so comfortably and at such convenient prices. Just a half hour's flight from Ecuador's capital to oil town LagoAgrio, at the Amazon headwaters, and another hour and a half bus ride over a paved road gets you to the park. No wonder that many consider Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve the world's best Amazon protected area!
With a modern solar installation, the Cuyabeno Lodge provides electricity 24 hours per day in all the rooms and the restaurant and hot water for all guests. Being certified by the Rainforest Alliance, it is the best lodge in the Cuyabeno Lakes area. So you will always be able to charge your electrical equipment.
A tree crown observation platform overlooks the lake. With the combined elevation of its tower on the top of the hill, the mobile system of the lodge has the best reach in the areas. The ranger station of Ecuador's Protected Areas Agency resides on the land of the lodge and the tower functions as the alarm center for the area.
