I don't gamble so I often get asked why I visit Las Vegas at least once a year. The answer? The free attractions make Las Vegas a frugal traveler's paradise (and we'll save the dining discussion for another article). Almost every casino has some sort of freebie gimmick to attract gamblers. In this article, I will cover, what I consider to be the must-see's to give tourists a flavor of Las Vegas.
With all the many casino resorts in Las Vegas, one might expect any zoo in the city to be a large, lavish piece of property with thousands of exotic animals from all over the globe. However, the Nevada Zoological-Botanical Park only covers a very small 3 acres and is a relatively small facility that mostly houses animals that can thrive in the dry climate.
From the outside, the zoo is very whimsical and even a bit outdated in terms of everything that surrounds it. The low faded walls are painted yellow and green, and the actual "Zoo" sign looks like something from a 1960s casino on The Strip. The inside of the facility is kept nicer, at least, and the animals are cared for by well-trained staff.
Circus Circus Shows
Of course, everything in Vegas is a business. Even though the zoo is a nonprofit facility, all guests still have to pay an admission fee. And you'll also find a gift shop in the zoo with an assortment of items, and even a gem exhibit area featuring some of the crystals from the area and other gems from around the world.
MGM GRAND - LION HABITAT is where the famous roaring lions are of which MGM is known for. Viewable from a glass partition, the lions are reared in a 8.5-acre ranch 12 miles away from MGM. The exhibit is free, compliments of MGM. CSI: The Experience is for the detective and crime-solver enthusiasts and it portrays interactive challenges, based on the hit TV show CSI, that features 3 murders, 15 lab stations, 15 suspects and 3 killers. Recommended for 12 years old and up. Younger kids need to be accompanied by adults. Admission rates are USD 28 and USD 21, respectively.
Note: There is an Ethel M's at the airport if you are concerned about chocolate melting (check hours of operation as every time I go, its closed).
Other animals at the zoo include parrots, chimpanzees, and endangered cats like the panther, and also eagles, emus, ostriches, wallabies, pygmy goats, and more. In total, over 150 species of plants and animals are held at the zoo.
