A Guide To The Animals You Can See On The Kind Of Desert Safari Dubai Provides

By Lenore Bolton

Travellers who book a place on the type of desert safari Dubai offers should not expect the same kind of myriad of animal species that they might expect to see in parts of Africa. Safaris in the United Arab Emirates are more of an entertainment experience, with the drive through the sands of the desert the real highlight of any trip. Arabic cultural activities like belly dancing and henna painting are also on offer to increase the range of experiences available on such trips.

Nevertheless, there are animals in the desert in Dubai. By the nature of the terrain though, which is largely barren and bare, the animals are thinly spread as they compete for scarce resources. If you are lucky though, there are several species which can be seen, though not with any great ease.

The animal that you are most likely to see is actually not wild at all, but has functioned as the main beast of burden in Arabia for centuries. This is the camel, and most safaris in this part of the world will include a camel ride at some stage. This will give you more exciting and intimate views of the terrain and landscape than if you were simply sitting in a vehicle all the time.

Another animal which you might see which is not considered truly wild any more is the Arabian Oryx. This antelope was actually declared extinct in the wild in the early 1960s, but several captive herds were kept in various locations. You might well see some of these animals, which, due to their long horns may have given birth to the legend of the unicorn, during your excursion

There is also a slightly smaller antelope known as the Arabian Mountain Gazelle. This small and lightweight antelope, which can weigh as little as 10 kilos, is exceptionally fast and can run at speeds in excess of 65 kilometres an hour. The range of this animal extends across the United Arab Emirates, apart from in the very sandy areas around the Liwa Oasis.

As you might expect from such an arid and hot land, it is easier to see reptiles rather than mammals here. The spiny-tailed lizard, also called the Dhub, exists in plentiful numbers, growing up to 65 centimetres in length. This lizard, which resembles a dragon but is actually a very placid animal generally, lives in colonies of burrows, usually located between 25 and 50 metres from each other.

The hare is a small mammal which can also be see here on this type of excursion. The hares found in the Emirates are smaller than their European counterparts, which sometimes means that they are mistaken for rabbits, an animal which is not present in the UAE. The hares do not burrow, but rely on camouflage to avoid predators like birds of prey and the desert fox.

The type of desert safari Dubai offers is not going to be to packed with wonderful animals sights. If you are lucky, then you may see some of the species mentioned above. A trip like this is usually much more about enjoying local culture, and trips across interesting terrain, than it is about exploring local wildlife.
