Dr. Hubbard has various training, experience, and knowledge as he was formerly a biomechanical crash engineer. The doctor created prototypes in 1985 then did crash tests during 1989. Such devices were declined by many racing safety companies though. The device gained interest only in 1994 after various famous drivers died during crashes.

These days, most racing organizations such as ARCA, NASCAR, and Formula One have stipulated already the wearing of such devices. V8 Supercar Series, CART, and World Rally Championship stipulated them as well. Sporting enthusiasts and professionals will need to don such device while racing.

Various designs are available nowadays already. There would be standards in safety, design, and materials. It is also used in other sports like monster truck events.
