I know precisely what you are thinking right now. "FREE?! In Orlando?! Yeah right!" But as a matter of fact there are quite a few free attractions in the Orlando area. Of course they aren't usually as spectacular as the more well known attractions, but when you're on a tight budget and you want a "day filler" be sure you check a few of these out.
The Boardwalk near EPCOT
Take a laid-back walk along Disney's Boardwalk, a re-creation of a 1930s-style Atlantic coastal community. The 45-acre waterfront community is popular for its nightclubs and entertainment hot spots. You're whole group are sure to take delight in the many street musicians, magicians, or performers that are absolutely free.
Celebration Town
Stroll the roads of the picture-perfect town of Celebration. The neighborhood, created by Disney, is a blend of historic-themed buildings and modern technology. Admire the old-fashioned shops and let the kids play in the interactive fountain. Go to the farmers market on Sunday mornings or see the many cost-free events (author readings and signings) which are available from the Reading Trout Books store. Travellers could even see (fake) snow in the winter time.
Downtown Disney/ Disney Springs
You don't need a ticket to experience the Walt Disney World retail stores and entertainment. Roam the streets of Downtown Disney Marketplace for a large selection of boutiques and eating spots for any budget. Make sure you see their Festival of the Masters (November), an arts-and-crafts event where youngsters can make chalk masterpieces. See glassblowers at Arribas Brothers; go and visit the 4,400-square-foot LEGO Imagination Center to take part in a "beat-the-clock" building contest, and also check out a 12-foot T. Rex and a 30-foot sea serpent, each made of several thousand LEGO bricks.
Fireworks at Walt Disney World
Even though you aren't in the park, it doesn't mean you can't view the Magic Kingdom fireworks. There are lots of superb viewing locations at and around the Magic Kingdom Resort Hotels. A couple of my favorites are The Polynesian hotel beach area, Bay Lake Tower, and The Grand Floridian Resort. These areas will most likely play the soundtrack from the shows to allow you to enjoy the full effect.
Haunted Children's Hill
Each year, thousands of tourists who come to Orlando make a visit to Lake Wales, Florida, to find out if the old Indian Legend of Spook Hill is true. A sign marks the place where it is possible to stop your automobile, put it in neutral, and watch as the car mysteriously moves uphill. There have been a lot of sightings of Children around the road, but when the tourists get out to check, they all vanish. Find out is the legends are true!
