By Heflin Woodard

There are many decisions that you can expect to make in your traveling plans. Sometimes that preparation is part of the fun of the trip. This article has many helpful hints and pointers on making traveling arrangements and plans to help you stay focused on the fun and less on the stress.

Many out of the way destinations are often overlooked for vacations. For example, while St. Thomas in the Caribbean is incredibly popular, with very little extra effort one can make a trip to Vieques off of Puerto Rico instead. It has many of the same amenities, is much less crowded, and will make your vacation seem much more special!

Even when on long flights, never assume the airline will provide everything you need. Consider packing your own pillow or blanket, as well as headphones. The airline versions are not very comfortable. Also, consider bringing your own snacks to guarantee you will have something to eat that you like.

Find out about national holidays. Before you schedule your international travel, check a calendar to see if there are any holidays during your stay abroad and what that means in terms of business and restaurant closings. It may affect what is open or available to do. You may find you have plenty or options or, it could be a day of rest for the locals - meaning a day wasted for you - leaving you with nothing to do.

Before purchasing a package deal for travel, check out the prices of the individual components. In many cases, the package deals are cheaper than buying the pieces separately, but not always. It never hurts to check out pricing for yourself before becoming locked in to purchasing the whole package, and you might discover there's a part of the package you don't want, such as meals.

Book your reservations and flights with the exact name shown on your government identification card. Although you may typically go by a nickname or middle name, for the purpose of ticketing, use your given name. Small name differences can be a huge headache when trying to get through security, especially abroad where it isn't obvious that Bill is short for William.

Count doors before you count sheep. When you arrive at your hotel, count the number of doors between your room and the stairs. In case of a fire with heavy smoke, you will be able to feel along the wall and know when you've reached the exit. This most likely will not happen, but, as always, you're better safe than sorry.

Drink plenty of water. Many doctors say that the primary reason people get sick on long flights is dehydration. Cabin air is very dry and in an enclosed space, germs travel much easier. Protect yourself by staying hydrated by drinking lots of water and juice and you may stave off the cold that the woman, three rows back is sporting.

As mentioned at the start of this article, making your traveling plans can be an enjoyable preamble to your trip and get it off to a great beginning. Use the tips and advice you learned in this article to help keep the fun in your travels, from start to finish.
